11:21 pm	HabiCAT Cat Hammock Product Concept 10:20 16.07.2009 HabiCAT Cat Hammock Product Concept This project was done by design student Cori Steele at the College for Creative Studies in Detroit, Michigan. Efficient and simple, I think it’s a wonderful design concept. The hammock frame is made of bent plywood and the sling is a piece of fleece fabric that threads through holes in the frame and secures with four knots. Simply untie the knots and throw the fabric in the wash, then easily tie it back onto the frame. The project is also designed to produce minimal waste by creating a secondary product, like a scratcher or a raised feeder, with the scrap material. Here are some pix of Cori building the prototype. You can view the entire design process in Cori’s portfolio on Coroflot. I just heard from the folks at NYC-based production company True Entertainment about a new project they are working on for Animal Planet. It’s a show about cat-loving women who are breaking out of the “crazy cat lady” stereotype. They are looking for a handful of these women who live in the NYC area. Unfortunately, yours truly lives way out west, but if this first project goes well, it may lead to a whole series of shows and you never know, the Moderncat household might be featured. So, if you’re a fun, witty, stylish, ambitious, cosmopolitan woman who adores your feline companions along with all the best accessories, products and treatments that cater to them, and you live in New York, New Jersey or Connecticut, then this is your chance! 11:21 pm	New study reveals that the cats are in control (but we already knew that) 21:24 14.07.2009 New study reveals that the cats are in control (but we already knew that) A recent article on Yahoo News highlights a study exploring how cats can control humans by making specific sounds. The study, conducted by Karen McComb of the University of Sussex, identified a certain purr-cry that cats use to get their way. Apparently the cats studied insert a high-pitched cry into the middle of a meow, resulting in an urgent sound that humans have a hard time ignoring. I’ve never personally noticed my cats making this kind of sound, but I’m going to be listening for it now. No matter what sounds they make, I know who’s in charge at my house. 12:21 pm	“Cat Ladies” Documentary Film Explores the Deeper Emotions Behind Extreme Cat Ownership 10:41 14.07.2009 “Cat Ladies” Documentary Film Explores the Deeper Emotions Behind Extreme Cat Ownership I know that Moderncat is supposed to be the antidote for all things “crazy cat lady,” but there is a new documentary I have to share with you that takes a closer look at this stereotype, exploring the deep emotions behind cat ownership. “Cat Ladies“ debuted last month at the Silverdocs Film Festival in Washington, D.C. The film profiles four cat ladies, creating “a sensitive and emotionally honest portrait of women whose lives and self-worth have become intractably linked to cats.” Not all of the women in the film have hundreds of cats. One woman only has three. However, it’s not the number of cats, but rather the obsessive attachment to them, that is being explored.  Ultimately, the documentary uncovers the universal issues of alienation, loss, and loneliness that we all face. The trailer above is enough to make me want to see the whole film. (If you can’t see the video above, click here to watch it on the site.) You can also read an interview with the film’s director, Christie Callan-Jones on the Silverdocs website. I can’t track down much information about distribution of the film. 9:42 am	Мороженное кофе латте 10:53 08.07.2009 Мороженное кофе латте А в Киеве все также жарко и все наши надежды на то, что когда мы вернемся из Очакова, в городе будет прохладнее, просто испарились. Просыпаться стало тяжело вдвойне и с самого утра хочется чего-нибудь холодненького и бодрящего. А еще и работать головой ой как лень :) Поэтому для таких же ленивых, как и я на данный момент, предлагаю “ленивый” рецепт. Ингредиенты простые, приготовление тоже. А самое главное - получаете прохладительно бодрящий десерт. Ингредиенты: 100 мл эспрессо или очень крепкого кофе, 6 столовых ложек сахара, 420 мл сгущеного молока, 300 мл сливок и горсть поджаренных кофейных зерен для украшения. Все, что вам нужно сделать, это приготовить ароматный свежий кофе, добавить в него сахар и размешать до полного растворения. Затем смешать сгущенку со сливками, добавить в кофе и снова все хорошенько перемешать. Готовую смесь разлить по чашкам, посыпать сверху кофейными зернами и отправить в морозилку. За час до подачи десерт нужно переставить в холодильник. Вот и все! Рецепт расчитан на 6 порций, так получается вкусное и быстрое в приготовлении угощение. Если вы не очень любите сладкое, просто добавьте меньше сахара. Сгущеное молоко довольно сладкое и можно обойтись вообще без сахара. Но это нужно пробовать на вкус, прежде чем отправлять в холодильник. Сливки тоже лучше не брать очень жирные. Может не будет так хорошо застывать, но зато и не так калорийно. А еще при приготовлении кофе можно добавить туда пряности - корицу, кардамон, гвоздику или мускатный орех! Не говоря уже о том, что и в сам десерт можно добавить дробленые орешки. Я, например, очень люблю фисташки и миндаль! Думаю, что с этим рецептом можно придумать еще много интересных вариантов.
